In past few months, growth of apparel sales has started to show negative signs.

Government's efforts to curb inflation with price caps had certain negative impact.

The growth of apparel sales has significantly slowed after continuous increase since second half of 2003.

Experts believe political changes and increasing interference in economy to be major reason behind decline in growth.

In October, monthly sales of textile, apparel, footwear in supermarket declined by 3.8 percent. Similarly, decline was witnessed in November at the rate of 4.4 percent.

However, apparel sales in shopping centers continued to grow, but growth rate declined compared to first half of 2006.

During January–May 2006, retail sales of apparel and footwear expanded at 24 percent in supermarket.

In comparison to above figures, sales of apparel and footwear saw a growth of 12.2 percent in November.

In the same period, sales of sports and accessories grown at 16.5 percent compared to 40.5 percent in April.

Similar trend was seen in sales of furnishing and household textiles as it grew at 17.6 percent in November.
