Europe favours Indian leather compared to China

Feb '07

Several pollution producing tanneries in China have closed shop due to strict implementation of environment laws coupled with global price rise of raw hides and skins by 30 percent has affected Chinese industry while helping Indian leather goods exporters.

India's stature as a high-quality leather processing centre and availability of skilled labour in comparison to China has influenced leading European leather goods buyers to turn towards India.

Italy has already shown active interest in establishing manufacturing and sourcing ties with India with a team of Italian buyers visit to Chennai between January 31 and February 2 to form alliances.

A 10-member consortium of buyers, representing around 100 retail outlets in Italy, from Italian Leather Goods Manufacturing Association (ILGMA) will be arriving in Kolkata, from February 23-25 to participate in the leather fair.

Their consortium's participation will help generate export orders for West Bengal based leather goods units, said Yogesh Gupta, Chairman of Trade Development subcommittee under Indian Leather Products Association (ILPA).

West Bengal is the largest exporter of leather goods in country, contributing more than 60 percent of country's leather exports, with exports of Rs1,800 crore.

The exhibition is part of an annual event organised by ILPA in association with Indian Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) and Council of Leather Exports(CLE).

Apart from Italy, 35 buyers from Spain, Germany, the UK, the US and a couple of Latin American countries will also participate in the fair.
