This year's Annual Assembly of the Belgium Cotton Association took place on February 2007 in Gent, Belgium. The Managing Director of the Belgian Cotton Association, Mr Pierre van Mol, reported about the situation of the Belgian cotton spinning sector in 2006.

Van Mol explained that the activities of the Belgium cotton type spinning industry, based on the figures for the first 10 months stabilized around the level of 33.700 tonnes. Whereas polyester/cotton blends hardly moves, and pure cotton yarns slightly dropped (-2%), manmade fibre yarns on the other hand went up by 4%.

Open-end yarns represented 89% of total activity. Domestic deliveries globally went down by 2%, whereas exports sharply increased by 11%. As a result, the export ratio further climbed from 25% in 2005 in 27.3% in 2006. Total (both internal and external) deliveries increased by 1%.

There was a modest pressure on prices in the sense that deliveries to third parties went up by 6.3% in volume terms but by only 4.7% in euros. In other words unit prices went down by 1.5%. End of December 2006 the order book was somewhat lower than a year before. Stocks were 19% lower.

With regard to the fibre consumption in the first ten months of 2006 cotton saw a slight decrease by 2 percent compared with the previous year to an estimated annual total of just below the 24,000 tons mark. Consumption of artificial and synthetic fibres went up by 6% and 4% respectively; the share of cotton in total fibre consumption in the Belgian cotton type spinning industry dropped from 68.7% to 67%.

During the year ended, Africa (= +67%) and the CIS (=+46%) were the big winners; their joint market share was sky-rocketing from 62% in 2005 to 87% in 2006; all other suppliers combined went down by 64%. Not less than 60% of African cotton was ordered in Mali.
