Silk dyeing manufacturers in Hetian city, Sinkiang province are running short of raw materials and are forced to stop production for four months.
The current stock is enough for just about three months.
Sinkiang province houses some of the biggest manufacturing units of silk dye in Northwestern China and their products are exported to other countries.
Their silk products are very famous in domestic and Asian countries as well. The shortage of raw material was caused by the considerable reduction in mulberry planting area after 2004.
The units have imported some raw materials from countries like CIS, Tajikistan. But they have to pay double even for the poor quality cocoon.
Local Government is encouraging farmers to plant mulberry, and farmers will get an allowance of RMB200 per acre of mulberry.
