Provide technological help to rural weavers – President

The President said that in the last 50 years, SITRA had filed over 59 patents and developed 25 textile machines and instruments related to different segments such as spinning, weaving, knitting and processing. He said in spite of this development taking place, textile machinery in other parts of world were cheaper from the angle of competitiveness. SITRA could facilitate production of textile machinery for world market in coming decade, he added.

On the occasion, the Union Minister for Textiles, Shri E.V.K.S. Elangovan urged the industry to stabilize Research and Development centers in their units. He said that there is a need to promote Research and Development efforts to make this sector genuinely competitive. He said that as the shortage of trained manpower in the textile industry is still run largely in the traditional manner hence manpower training should be given priority. He said that textile research associations like SITRA may direct their efforts to find newer and more effective ways to train people at all levels.

Highlighting the importance of Human Resource Management in the textile sector the Minister said that the research units should look at their expenditure on training as investment. He said textile industry in the country was expected who have a cumulative investment of 1,40,000 crore between 2002-2010.

Shri Elangovan said that with a large textile manufacturing base and technical manpower, India has the potential to become the leading exporters of the various technical textile products. With greater investment focused on R & D efforts in creation of the state of the art common testing facilities we can emerge as a leading technical textile manufacturers and exporters, he added.

The Chairman of the SITRA, Shri D. Sarath Chandran, The former Chairman of the SITRA, Shri G.K. Sundaram, and the Chairman of South India Small Spinners Association, Shri Mohan Kandasamy were also present on the occasion.
