Business of second hand garments, which is an important source of income for many people, is flourishing all across the globe.
Second hand clothes are sold at all major markets in Nigerian cities, despite the fact that Government has banned import of these clothes, mostly from EU countries. Business of such merchandize has expanded here owing to good response from consumers.
Markets for used apparel are situated in particular areas for quick recognition. Nucleus of clothing trade in Lagos is Katangwa market in Abule Egba, from where dealers buy second hand clothes for their stores in the city. These are then sold at retail prices.
Bales of used garments are opened at Katangwa market in early mornings. Traders gather at the spot to choose best pieces before others can lay their hands on them.
Merchants exhibit the rumpled garments in hangers and empty spaces at their shops, with locals coming to purchase them for consumption or reselling. Katangwa has emerged as a hot spot for regular customers hence apparel business is growing.
Second hand shirts, trousers, suits, jackets, footwear, belts, socks, innerwear, nightwear, bed sheets etc, for kids and grown ups are offered at the market. There is continuous demand for used apparel in Nigeria.
