Pre Budget comments from M. Mallyah, Secretary, INDA, USA-India
Budget for the year 2007 is coming at a time when India is at the crossroads of fast paced development into Nonwovens and technical textiles.
President Abdul Kalam during his recent address in Coimbatore said technological inputs and developments are needed to improve the handloom sector in India to increase its revenue. He advised the scientists in the research associations to adopt a new research culture to invent new innovations in textiles especially technical textiles.
While the country is targeting double digit growth in GDP by 2010, the president was right in identifying technological advancements and innovations to be the driving forces behind achieving double digit growth.
In textiles, the growth and value addition can happen not in conventional textiles but only in Nonwovens and technical textiles. Indian manufacturing sector should have tremendous growth backed by solid innovation. Nonwovens and technical textiles invole processes to develop value added engineered textiles directly from fibre to fabric by reducing the cost with increased productivity.
There are many conducive factors in India that will drive the growth of Nonwoven and Technical textile industry in India. They are:
1. Population factor ( 90 million young people, 21 million educated people).
2. Income, Willingness and Availability of plastic money to spend. People are ready to spend more if they see value & brands.
