Data now on hand shows that December sales of clothing at retail in Japan remained sluggish and has remained that way since our last report covering the October sales.

According to Japan's Department Stores Association, clothing sales at their 277 member stores fell moderately year-on-year in December 2006.

Men's wear sales were sluggish across all items including coats, suits, and jackets. Women's wear sales in general were also dull, although one-piece dresses became very popular this winter season. Sales of women's coats were reported satisfactory for most department store brands, with long-length coats, both synthetic and wool/wool blend selling well.

Higher priced brands outperformed volume market products in department stores. Clothing sales at national supermarket chains also dipped in December from a year earlier.

Japan's retailers had this Autumn/Winter replaced stocks from a very low stock level caused by explosive sales in winter 2005 due to abnormally cold weather. This in turn positively affected import levels of both men's and women's wear, particularly coats.

The slow progress at retail in late 2006 could negatively affect the level of new order placement by retailers and apparel brands for the next Autumn/Winter season, if a large volume of retail stock is left at the end of the season.
