Domestic apparel sales show upward trend in 2006

From January to November 2006, the total retail sales of clothing showed a year-on-year increase of 21.5 percent. China's total retail sales of consumer goods amounted to 7.641 trillion yuan in 2006, an increase of 13.7 percent over the same period of the previous year.

Retail sales of large clothing enterprises in 2006 showed that clothing sales continued to grow, however, the increase rate lessened. Sales increased by 18.63 percent over the same period in 2005 in terms of sales value, up 14.95 percent in terms of volume, indicating a drop of 6.37 percent and 6.45 percent, respectively, in growth rate.

Sales prices increased by 3.12 percent over the same period of the previous year. Clothing consumption structure upgraded, consumers gradually shifted to higher consumption levels, clothing market levels were more clearly. Prices of middle - high end markets kept rising, consumers were gradually adapted existing price levels.

Looking at the categories of consumer goods, clothing sales of ladies' wear (excluding underwear, T-shirt, jeans, cold-prevent apparel and leather garments, wool sweaters and other categories) accounted for 28.96 percent of the total clothing sales, increased by 18.85 percent over the same period of previous year, representing the biggest spending category.

Knitted underwear sales accounted for 16.27 percent of the total clothing sales, increased by 12.82 percent over the same period of the previous year, marking the second largest expenditure category.
