Cotton imports in January 2007 reached 123,000 tons, reducing 117,300 tons or 48.81 percent from December and representing year-on-year drop of 177,800 tons or 59.11 percent.
In 2006 cotton year (September 2006-January 2007), China imported 737,600 tons cotton, 46.71 percent less than the same period of 2005.
The price of cotton imports in January slightly declined. China's import cotton price index (FC IndexM) was 60.44 cents on January 31, down 1.06 cents compared with January 4.
The average price was 61.28 cents per pound in January, 667 yuan below domestic cotton in 328 level, which was converted into 13328 yuan per ton against floating tariff, 405 yuan higher than domestic growth in 328 level.
