Since 2007, huge cotton from Uzbekistan, Central Asia, has flooded Xinjiang, then being transported to the warehouse in Zhangjiagang Bonded Zone. According to customs statistics, by the end of January, the cotton quantity imported from Central Asia exceeded 36,000 tons, with total value over US $45 million.

According to URUMQI Customs statistics, the annual cotton imports from Central Asia were less than 60,000 tons in 2006, with value at about $70 million. The cotton was transported from Uzbekistan, and made declaration via Alataw Pass in Xinjiang, and then being sent to Zhangjiagang bonded area through rail transit. The importer was China Xinjiang Farming Hongye Cotton Ltd. Company.

As members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, China and Uzbekistan have maintained a long-term trade relation, in particular, in July 2005, Vice Premier Wu Yi visited Uzbekistan and signed substantive trade and friendship agreements with Uzbek, which has created a lot of favorable conditions and opportunities for Uzbek cotton to export into China.

At present, China is the largest buyer of Uzbek cotton, import volume accounts for more than 30 percent of Uzbek total cotton exports.
