Rural artisans showcase creations at craft & khadi Expo

CHENNAI:

Mayor M. Subramaniam inaugurated the Crafts and Khadi Expo here on Tuesday, showcasing a variety of interesting products made by rural artisans from all over the country, particularly south India.

The exhibition-cum-sale, organised by zonal-level Khadi and Village Industries Commission and Rural Employment Generation Programme, will be staged at Valluvar Kottam, Nungambakkam, till March 25.

Artisans from States such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra, Jammu and Kashmir have put up stalls to display their creations.

The Expo includes paintings on bamboo by rural folk of Karnataka, khadi wear, tiny hand-made Ganeshas made of terracotta, jute and terracotta jewellery, brass items, Andhra pickles, dress material, furniture, incense sticks and various products made of `vettiver' adorn stalls at the Expo.

Purchases from this sector for Corporation's use will be considered to contribute to growth of rural economy, the Mayor said.

K. Lakshmikandan Bharathi, member of the State Planning Commission, speaking on the need to promote khadi among youth, urged the Mayor to consider introducing khadi in Corporation schools.

"Even if children and teachers wear khadi cloth once a month, they can experience the pride of using a swadesi product," he said.
