According to China's customs statistics, in 2006 China exported US $8.644 billion of silk products, slightly up 1.71 percent over the previous year. Among them, true silk goods exports were $3.715 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 99 percent.
The industry now generally concerns about the subject as whether China's silk exports could regain the good situation of booming both in production and sales, meanwhile continues to grow steadily in 2007.
Last year, domestic silk prices went up with volatility. There appeared two peaks and the two bottoms. On one hand, the rising costs of raw materials promoted silk export prices higher; on the other hand, fluctuation of cocoon price made businessmen hesitated to put up orders.
For international market, though the US and EU imposed textile quotas or other trade protection measures, they only related to smaller amount of silk goods and China's silk exports were less impacted.
In addition, looking at international product competition, India is also working hard to develop their silk industry. From textiles developing trend, the current development of silk products face increasing challenges from rayon and chemical silk.
China is worth of the name of the biggest producer and exporter of silk products. Cocoon and silk production in China accounted for more than 70 percent of the world total output. Raw silk and true silk fabric export volume accounted for 90 percent and 70 percent of the totalworld trade, respectively.
