In order to further prepare and practice for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival celebrated in Washington DC, US at the end of June 2007, for two days - March 10th and March 11th 2007 - Department of Cultural Heritage will cooperate with Vietnam Museum of Ethnology to organize the Mekong River Region Mini Bamboo Festival at the outdoor exhibition of Vietnam Museum of Ethnology on Nguyen Van Huyen Road, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.

As part of a cultural collaborative project between Vietnam and the US, at the end of June 2007, Vietnam will participate in Smithsonian Folklife Festival celebrated in Washington DC, on the subject “Mekong River – Connecting Cultures”, which receives participation of the following countries in Mekong region: Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, China and Vietnam.

Festival will bring to visitors many opportunities to exchange with 14 artisans (8 artisans from China, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, 6 from different parts of Vietnam). Similarities and specific features in weaving traditions of people in the Mekong region will be represented through the fish catching tools woven from bamboo by Lao people in Thailand, Khmu people in Laos, Khmer people in Cambodia, Viet people in Dong Thap Province, Vietnam, and the Black Thai in Dien Bien Province, Vietnam; as well as through basketry of Viet people in Can Tho Province, Vietnam and through bamboo implements of Thai people in Yunnan, China.

This is an interesting opportunity for participants as well as for anyone interested in traditional basketry and its long history and close attachments with inhabitants of Mekong region, including Vietnam. There will be some special activities reserved for children.
