It is reported that China produced 9.41 million tons of ethylene in 2006, up 24.5 percent over 7.55 million tons in 2005.
Meanwhile, as of the end of 2006, China's ethylene production capacity has reached 9.67 million tons per year, compared with 7.78 million tons per year in 2005.
The rapid increase of China's ethylene production was largely attributed to the operation of three joint venture projects, including 800,000-ton ethylene project of CNOOC Shell Nanhai petrochemical. This project started operation in the first quarter and completed 646,000 tons of ethylene production in 2006.
Other two projects are Shanghai SECCO Petrochemical increased production of 336,000 tons of ethylene and Nanjing Yangba increased 306,000 tons of ethylene production.
China's ethylene production capacity increased 1.89 million tons in 2006. In addition to Nanhai, Sino-Pec Maoming expanded 640,000 ton per year and Lanzhou enlarged 450,000 ton per year.
