Mohair Expo 2007, which aims at making South Africans aware of mohair fibre, is being held at Port Elizabeth from March 9 to March 11. City is considered to be the mohair capital of world, also it is one of country's best beach holiday destinations with 40 km of unspoiled coastline.

Fashion shows featuring designer Leandre Fourie's creations as well as shearing competitions are part of the expo, arranged on lawns opposite the Boardwalk.

Organizers want to emphasize the point that mohair has many applications, knitting being just one of them. This fibre is reserved for high-end, niche markets due to rare availability.

Mohair Expo 2007 will confer 'Miyuki' award to the farmer producing best mohair clip countrywide and 'Zegna' trophy to the one producing best quality bale of children's mohair.

City of Port Elizabeth is being visited by 20 international firms from US, Australia, France, Japan and Turkey. Australian and US enterprises are growers, while others are manufacturers.

City's repute as a big shot in mohair industry is reinforced by the presence of two spinning units in Nelson Mandela Bay, a wool exchange and a dyeing plant.

South Africa is the largest producer of mohair fibre globally, with Eastern Cape accounting for 80 percent production according to Mohair South Africa sources.
