Vendors at many clothing markets in Shanghai have started speaking in English to communicate properly with tourists. They are also learning foreign languages like Spanish, French and Japanese.
Shopkeepers welcome foreign customers, converse and bargain with them in English. At clothing markets like Dongjiadu Lu Fabric Market and Yatai Shenghui Shopping Square, vendors coax these people in English to buy jackets, bags and other products.
Shop assistants in department stores around Shanghai can also speak the language. But owners want them to better their business skills instead of focusing on language.
Another reason for vendors and locals being keen to learn the language is that they are preparing themselves for upcoming Olympics commencing from August 8, 2008. They will be able to welcome international visitors and communicate properly.
