Punjab CM impresses upon the need to increase cotton yield

CHANDIGARH:

Farm scientists of Punjab Agriculture University have been asked to help develop modern farm practices to further increase the yield in cotton in Malwa region, by Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, here on Tuesday.

He was presiding over a meeting of cotton Consortium of eminent textile entrepreneurs.

He impressed upon the need to bring maximum villages under cotton crop cultivation, keeping in view the record production of 26 lac bales of cotton during 2006.

Badal asked the Consortium to adopt 50 villages of Lambi block on the same pattern and Rural Development Board would make available Rs50 lac for this programme.

In order to ensure maximum yield, Badal asked Managing Director of Markfed to tie up with reputed firms to supply recommended varieties of BT cotton seed and quality pesticides to cotton growers.

Vice-Chancellor of PAU Ludhiana and State Agriculture Department were asked to regularly hold training camps for cotton growers through its Extension Education Wing.

Agriculture Development Officers were also urged upon to upgrade their knowledge about latest technological skills and agricultural inputs for increasing production of cotton.

The meeting was attended by Financial Commissioner (Development) G.S.Sandhu, Secretary Punjab Mandi Board Kulbir Singh, MD Markfed G.S.Grewal, Vice-Chancellor PAU Dr.K.S.Aulakh, besides Jawahar Lal Oswal (Nahar Group), Shri Pal Oswal (Vardhman Group), Rajinder Gupta (Trident), Ashok Bagrodia (Winsome) and Shiv Prasad Mittal (Aarti International Group) and all members of cotton Consortium.
