Nellore leather complex to be a global model

CHENNAI:
International leather complex to be built in Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, is set to develop into a global model and a benchmark for such parks to be set up in future.
The zone is expected to come up on a 500 acres plot at Krishnapatnam near Nellore in Andhra Pradesh.
"Large-scale integrated tanneries will operate adhering to very strict environmental norms. Raw hides and skins would be sourced from global markets. By adopting an integrated approach through linking tanning operations to aquaculture and salt manufacturing, the existing activities in the region, a sustainable and unique model would be developed," sources in Leather Industry Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (LIDCAP), nodal agency for Centrally-funded project and Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), primary consultants.
CLRI prepared a project report in association with L&T Ramboll which would make it possible to reach a zero-discharge level and find a permanent and viable solution to problem of tannery effluents.
The remaining water, after proper treatment and removal of colour and chemicals, is proposed to be let out into Bay of Bengal. It is also planned that treated water from tanneries could be used for aquaculture.
A special purpose vehicle (SPV) to implement Rs144 crore project fully funded by Union Government is under discussion. Rs30 crore has already been released.
Andhra Pradesh Government has allotted 380 acres of land for the project. The plan is to acquire up to 500 acres.
