Woolmark to secure future of European carpet yarn manufacturer

A Woolmark Company technical expert has answered a call by the US Government's USAID agency to help protect the future of an eastern European carpet yarn manufacturer.

“Production problems were a serious problem for Moldovan business Covoare-Ungheni,” explains Executive Director, The Woolmark Company, Brenda McGahan.

“The company employs hundreds of people and were in danger of losing their largest client, finished carpet manufacturer Moldabella, due to production problems which were causing defective product.”

“Moldabella put Covoare-Ungheni on notice – fix the problems or lose the business.” USAID's CEED project (that's Competitiveness Enhancement and Enterprise Development) working to improve competitiveness in the textile industry, provided Covoare-Ungheni with access to The Woolmark Company's Senior Technologist, Worsted Processing, Dr Kevin Lordan, to help resolve the issues.

Working with Covoare-Ungheni technical staff, Kevin found that the yarn quality problems could be solved with minor changes to expensive spinning machinery and investment in critical ancillary equipment. He re-calibrated the equipment and trained staff to do it themselves in the future.

“The results of Kevin's efforts, I'm delighted to report, are that yarn quality has improved significantly, millions of Euros have been saved from unnecessary expenditure and hundreds of at-risk jobs have been protected,” says Brenda McGahan.

“The defects that Moldabella experienced have been eliminated, protecting Covoare-Ungheni's position as their sole supplier of woollen yarns. We were glad to be of assistance, helping to support a businesses that specialises in wool.”
