The limited import quotas released by the Tianjin state, adversely affected the cotton imports during the January-February period.

The imports declined considerably as compared to the same period last year.

According to customs statistics, for January-February 2007 period, Tianjin Port imported 21,700 tons of cotton, valued at US $28.43 million, down 75.26 percent and 74.32 percent, respectively, over the same period last year.

Cotton imports of Tianjin Port were mainly from India, while imports from the US dropped substantially.

During the period, Port imported 17,100 tons cotton from India, down 25.37 percent, accounting for 79.07 percent of Tianjin Port's total cotton imports for the same period.

Cotton imports from the US were 160,000 ton, down by 95.32 percent, accounting for 7.21 percent of the total imports.

The main reason for this import decline in January to February was due to the limited import quotas released by the state.
