Cotton situation to remain strong this year

Cotton production is expected to continue steady growth this year, with acreage likely to expand.

Annual cotton output recorded 6.73 million tons in 2006, an increase of 17.8 percent over the previous year, an all-time high. Yarn output reached 17.4 million tons in 2006, an increase of 20 percent over the previous year, another record high.

Textile production will maintain steady growth in 2007. Cotton demand is expected to be about 11 million tons in 2007.

According to the statistics from the recently held fifth meeting of the first Board session of China Cotton Association, as of the end of February, cotton procurement progress reached 92 percent this year, with average purchase price at 611 yuan per 0.05 ton.

Cotton acreage is expected to be 8124 million mu in 2007(one hectare =15 Chinese mu), estimated 260,000 mu more than last year, an increase of 0.32 percent over last year.
