The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) plans to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This will build partnerships to take grassroots innovations to the market.

The ground for this, and collaboration with the National Academies of the US, was laid at the First Global Innovation Summit. Speaking at the summit on in New Delhi on Friday, Chief Executive of the Society of Innovation and Development, IISc, S. Mohan said it was important for closer cooperation between research and development institutions and industry to foster innovation.

Both IISc and NIF have a large database of grassroots innovations that have languished for the want of linkages with industry. The MoU would be the first organized attempt to get support for these innovations and take some of them to the market. This would reward innovators and expand the market.

“Innovation should help Indian companies change things at the bottom of the pyramid,” said Chairman, CII Mission for Innovation in Manufacturing, Dr Surinder Kapur. There was an opportunity to do this while the Indian economy is doing well, he said, calling on Indian industry to innovate for the non-consuming market.

The key to innovation, said Professor Emeritus, University of Tsukuba, Shoji Shiba, was human power. “You need to create human power that will lead to innovation,” he told the participants at the Summit.

Prof. Shiba said innovative ideas came from outside the company and innovative managers needed to act as a bridge for these ideas, rather than blocking them.

He announced the launch of CII's programme, the Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing Programme that aims to create 200 visionary leaders over the next three years. These leaders will work towards creating or leading globally innovative companies. The first batch will start in July 2007.
