Old carpet push recycling efforts

To avoid disposal of 70 million pounds of carpet every year, a recycling programme is designed to keep used rugs away off Minnesota landfills.

This is a joint three-week old program started by Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Hank's Specialties, Bro-Tex Inc and Shaw Industries Inc.

Hank Specialties based in New Brighton operates 15 carpet and flooring tool supply stores in Minnesota. It has recycled carpet pads for the past 10 years, and now is collecting used carpet from the public and carpet installers for recycling.

Bro-Tex Inc, the St. Paul-based textile-recycling firm converts virgin carpet threads into nylon pellets, and shreds and bales clothing for use in padded products.

Shaw Industries Inc, a Georgia-based unit of Berkshire Hathaway, is nation's largest carpet maker. Shaw will receive post-consumer carpet from Bro-Tex and Hank's, and recycle nylon fibers therefrom into new ones.

These can also be used as raw material for everything from padding to cement mix and even sewer pipes.

This initiative has environmental groups upbeat about recycling ventures, as well.
