Chamber to ensure high quality ELS cotton seeds reach farmers

Supply of bad quality Extra Long Staple (ELS) cotton seeds has been the reason for low cotton yield, causing concern amongst North Karnataka farmers, according to Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).
Cotton sub-committee members of KCCI, Karnataka Cotton Association, traders, farmer representatives, seed growers and other stake holders from various parts of North Karnataka attended a meeting here on Thursday. Secretary, KCCI S B Mugabast informed in the meeting that yield of ELS cotton has gone down alarmingly during last year in the region.
Chamber plans to conduct an ELS Cotton Conference in April and intends to incorporate various measures to create awareness among stake holders, as cotton season will begin shortly.
Central and State Government Agricultural and Textile Ministers, all concerned Government departments, agricultural universities and other stake holders, will attend the conference, he informed in the meeting.
Starting April third-week, an awareness campaign for cotton growers will be undertaken by a committee formed by KCCI.
High quality ELS Cotton should be supplied by Agricultural Department and Government of Karnataka to farmers was expressed in the meeting.
