All-India Flat Tape Manufacturers' Association (AIFTMA) is making demands to provide plastics woven sacks an equal status with jute for bulk packaging of food grain and sugar.
Plastic-woven sacks maintain all the criteria like they are quite ductile and have sufficient strength to preserve food grains.
AIFTMA Vice-President K D Agarwal said “Various studies have revealed that plastic-woven sacks are a better option than jute. It is not only cheap, but also easily available”.
The AIFTMA had appealed to the Gujarat High Court, but the Government has not issued any notification.
Strikes in jute mills paved the way for plastic-woven sacks to prove its efficiency in packaging commodities other than food grains.
According to Agrawal, in 2005-06 exports of plastic-woven bags stood at Rs500 crore, and it is expected to grow to Rs700 crore during the current financial year.
