Under his aegis in the years that followed, the scientific core competencies and range of seminars offered by the Hohenstein Institute was consistently extended in this field. This formed the basis for the transfer of the Research Centre for Dry Cleaning, which was founded in 1953 and based in Krefeld, to Bönnigheim.
As the scientific director of the Research Centre for Dry Cleaning, Josef Kurz played a key role in the development of alternative solvents and optimised cleaning technologies in the 1970s and 80s. These became necessary due to the damaging effect of fluorinated hydrocarbons on the ozone and the fact that regulations governing permitted levels of perchloroethylene emissions were becoming more stringent.
At the end of the 1980s, following in-depth research, it was possible to launch a commercial alternative to fluorinated hydrocarbons on the market in the form of carbon dioxide solvents, and to successfully counter the negative image of dry-cleaning amongst the public by setting up a press information centre.
The expertise available and the potential for innovation made the Hohenstein Institutes the world's leading research institute for environmentally-friendly cleaning processes. At the end of the 1990s, the dry cleaning of textiles in liquid CO2 was investigated within two ground-breaking projects, and a suitable prototype machine was constructed in conjunction with the company Linde.
