Govt controlled cotton prices to curb farmer exploitation

Government has reported that in order to control exploitation of farmers by ginners, Cotton Development Authority will regulate prices in the country.
Nyanza Deputy Provincial Director of Agriculture, Johnston Imbira, explained, “Cotton ginneries have in the past been underpaying farmers and now there are measures to regulate cotton prices."
Cotton growers were upset about the low prices and many were considering shifting to other businesses.
However, now Government has raised prices from mere Sh12 to Sh21 per kilogram and is hoping to lift farmers from their plight.
Director said that the Nyanza Province has the potential to of over 25000 tons, but produced only 46 tons in 2006.
Imbira further assured, “Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (Kari) has introduced a new breed of cotton known as KSA81m, which we expect will be very productive."
He also called for investors to use cotton not only for textile s but also for products like cooking oil and soaps.
