Cotton imports show steep slide in Feb

According to customs statistics, cotton imports marked 125,000 metric tons in February, import value amounting to US $164 million, basically the same as the previous month.

China's cotton imports from January to February 2007 totaled 248,200 tons, less 196,000 tons comparing with a year earlier, declining 60.09 percent, total import value reaching $164 million, 59.58 percent in decrease.

However, the average import price in January-February was $1.33 per kg, an increase of 1.53 percent over the same period last year.

As for the countries of cotton imports, India was still the main supplier in February. China's imports from India came up to 69,055 tons, accounting for 55 percent of total imports.

Uzbekistan took the second place, supplying 0,421 tons of cotton and accounting for 16.32 percent of total imports.

China's imports from US were 17,541 tons, accounting for 14 percent of total imports. Cotton imports from the US reached to a total of 42,541 tons from January to February 2007, accounting for 17.12 percent of total imports, falling sharply from the same period last year, a decline of 79.86 percent in decline.

In addition to these countries, the top 15 suppliers for the month also included Benin, Cameroon, and Côte d'Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Zambia, Egypt, Turkey, Chad and Israel.

The main areas of China's cotton imports in February were Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai and Tianjin. Compared to last year, imported cotton volume of all Provinces and cities showed different levels in decline.
