Govt may rethink on textile machinery duty

Minister of State for Textiles EVKS Elangovan, inaugurated the 48th Joint Technological Conference at SITRA auditorium organized by Ahmedabad Textile Industry's Research Association (ATIRA), Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and South India Textile Research Association (SITRA).
He stressed upon the importance of research and development which would go a long way in promoting the textile industry and render it competitive, globally.
The Southern India Mills' Association (SIMA) Chairman S V Arumugam commented that imposing eight percent central excise duty on local machinery may create problems for the weaving and processing chains of the textile industry.
Responding to that issue, Elangovan assured that the ministry has discussed the matter of levying eight percent duty on 40 textile machineries with the Union Finance Ministry and the industry can expect favourable response.
The Minister also assured that Textile Ministry is contemplating to enhance financial support to the Textile Research Associations (TRAs) in order to promote research and developmental efforts while setting up several powerloom training centres.
