Technical textile has a 25-30 percent share in the world clothing industry, concentrating in North and South America, Western and Eastern Europe as well as Southeast Asia. The US, India, China, UK, Germany, France and Italy are leading producers of technical textiles.

By 2010, this sector is likely to reach a magnitude of US $126 billion. EU members attribute great significance to technical textiles. China is the fastest developing country in the world and India has made highest amount of investment in that segment. Germany and Italy are the two countries that come to mind in Europe in production of technical textiles.

In Turkey numerous companies that have proven themselves in textiles and ready-to-wear sector are slowly exploring this industry. In 2005, Turkey exported $801 million technical textiles.

According to 2004 data the share of main product groups in exports of technical textiles is as follows: packaging textiles 23.4 percent, materials for vehicles 18.9 percent, home textiles 10.2 percent, monofilaments 18.4 percent and others 15.9 percent.

Technical Textiles produced in Turkey are used chiefly as geotextiles, canvas, awning, bags, furniture and bed lining, agricultural textiles and geo textiles. Turkey is the EU's largest big bag supplier, and is a notable supplier for the world, too.
