Tibetan carpets – Setting Sun on heritage horizon

As the traditional Tibetan arts and crafts in Qinghai Plateau, the history of Tibetan carpet could be traced back to the Bronze Age of 2,000 years ago. However, scale exports of Tibetan carpet have been formed just in the past 20 years.
These short 20 years have contained all the developing phases of Tibetan carpet exports from its start to rise, then the recession. In short, it covers the past and the present of its exports history.
In 1959, the first batch of 2,748 square meters of carpet produced by Qinghai was exported.
Tibetan carpets made by Nepal are originated from China. But in 1978 and 1979, Nepal's carpet exports exceeded US $160 million, while Tibetan carpet exports were still scattered.
In 2001, Qinghai Province stated taking interest in the development of Tibetan carpet industry. In 2003, Tibetan carpet industry was included into the province's key development industries for its national characteristics. The provincial government made a series of supportive policies as the industry was put into the '11th Five-Year' development plan.
From 2003 to the end of 2006, the province invested more than 34 million yuan of supporting funds. Related employees increased to 31,000 from over 3,000 people.
In 2006, Tibetan carpets experienced an oversupply phenomenon, with supply being 2-3 percent higher over demand. .
Experts say that China's Tibetan carpet production is more scattered than that in Nepal, Pakistan, India and other Tibetan carpet producing areas. China's production mainly based on family workshops is much more advanced.
The enterprises that have obtained a basis of industrial production should strengthen R & D, expand sales, and explore markets, so as to help this sunrise industry continue its steady and healthy development.
