In order to give boost to the textile sector, Tamil Nadu Government is planning to introduce its own textile policy, State Textile Vision 2012.
According to Handlooms Minister N K K P Raja, the policy would would cover three major sectors - handlooms, power looms and textile mills - and concentrate on developing and modernizing the textile industry in the state.
Export zones would be set up at Virudhu Nagar and Nagercoil to help weavers earn more revenue.
A development project has been set up along with National Institute of Design (NID) to create about 500 new designs for silk products at Kancheepuram, Arni, Rasipuram and Mannargudi which will be launched during Deepavali.
The Minister pointed out that five cooperative spinning mills made profits this year and the number of profit making handloom weavers' cooperative societies went up to 850 in 2006-2007, from 760 during the previous year.
To provide exclusive identity to handloom products and improve marketing, the Department is taking steps to launch special logo.
