After the farmers of Rushinga district threatened to withhold their produce, companies raised cotton price from US $2.5 to $3.5 per kilogram.

However, cotton growers are still complaining and are concerned saying the rates offered are too low.

Cotton consumers include enterprises like Olam, Insing, Alliance, Cargill, Cotton Company of Zimbabwe and Grafax.

Cotton Buyers' Association Chairperson and CEO of Cottco Group Happymore Maparahas supported the price and said that the industry was trying its best to quote reasonable rates.

Maparahas further explained, “Cotton is an export product and therefore there are complex challenges in the sector.”

He stressed that the current price was a fair deal for both farmers and companies.

Sources report that several farmers are incurring losses by cotton cultivation. Experts say Government need to take immediate steps in the matter so that farmers are not compelled to shift to other trades.
