National Institute of Fashion Technology is an autonomous body set up under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The Institute has been playing a catalytic role in sensitizing and professionalizing the fashion industry, and putting India on the world fashion map.
Today, NIFT is acknowledged as the premier institute of fashion, design, management and technology across the globe and has been assigned a statutory status by an Act of Parliament in 2007 to grant degrees.
The Fashion and Textiles as one of the popular discipline under the four years undergraduate design programme offers education in textiles while enhancing creativity, and applying design ideas in Knitted Apparel and Home Fashion Industry.
Knits, Woven and Prints are complementary textile subjects and together offer a rich and versatile education. The programme builds along with integrating creative dimension of design with knit and textile technology, keeps in mind the historical, social and cultural contexts.
The Fashion and Textiles programme offers a specialisation in Textile Design and Knitwear Design , the former offered at New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad and Kolkata, and the latter at New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai.
Knitwear Design: The specialization of Knitwear Design is structured keeping in view the requirements of the Knitting industry and various brands handling knitted garments. The students are exposed to all the techniques of designing and developing fabric and knitted garments.
