11th Eastern Carpet Conference

May '07
The 11th Eastern Carpet Conference known as the world's important meet of the industry was conducted at Istanbul during April 19-22, 2007.

This conference was held for the first time in a country that produces hand woven carpets that attracted a restoration team, comprising scientists, professors and collectors from around the world which restored kilims, carpets, pillows and dresses.

Gönül Paksoy, leading artisan from Turkey exhibited her works titled 'Zamansiz Sadelik – Timeless Simplicity.'

A special carpet for the Conference by a Turkish firm Has Hali titled 'Universe,' has also been unvield at the Conference. It was weaved using pure silk and one kilogram of 23 carat gold.

Also on display were the most valuable Hereke carpets having one million nodal per meter square, but 'Universe' contains 2 million 100 thousand nodal per meter square earning laurels from all quarters.

'Universe' is a rare piece according to Latif Tarasli who is one of the academicians of Mimar Sinan University's Carpet, Rug and Old Cloth Department which designed its kerb.

The kerb contains Ottoman period Turkish poems describing the universe and carrying pictures weaved around these poems. This carpet also contains about 354 different plant and animal figurines. It took five professional weavers nearly 54 months to deliver this priceless piece.

Has Hali's Chairman of The Board of Directors - Ahmet Hasoglu, introduced his organization (which incidentally has hosted this conference) as well as promoting Turkey throughout the world. Hasoglu also informed that participants will visit the carpet producing cities around Turkey, this week.

When questioned whether 'Universe' will be up for sale, Hasoglu replied in the negative.
