Year 2006 was as good as nightmare for Pakistani garment industry as many manufacturers of knitwears, home textiles and jeans were forced to shut down their factories after facing competition and huge losses.
Sales of garment and other related machinery witnessed a 30 percent decline in 2006 but some were optimistic about the year 2007.
However, according to some garment manufacturers and experts, those who wanted to have firm foot in the industry, had to invest more in technology and R&D.
During December 2006 – April 2007, many such optimistic companies invested in this industry and considerable sale of machinery was recorded.
According to experts, the garment industry needs technological upgradation and more marketing world wide. They also criticized Export Promotion Bureau for its passive role as the Bureau has failed to exploit internet - the best tool for international marketing.
Experts also underline the need of collaboration with foreign companies as companies abroad come with their marketing strategies and technical expertise.
