Kerala has been one of the most popular holiday destinations, enchanting millions of tourists from all over the world every year. And now, it is all set to add another attraction to its list.
The 'Grand Kerala Shopping Festival', organized annually around September and expected to last four months, is designed to lure global shoppers by offering unique Indian specialties.
Cherian Philip, Chairman, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) explained to the media, “The festival will feature products ranging from the state's handicrafts, handloom textiles, traditional jewellery and spices to consumer durables. Manufacturers, traders and service providers in Kerala will be participants at the festival that will present the entire state as a shopping mall. Special schemes will be offered by the participants to the shoppers. Also awaiting them will be grand prizes.”
Sources say that this fest is an attempt to improve contribution of tourism to the state GDP from current 12 percent to 15 percent.
Since Middle East is one of the top markets for Kerala tourism, special packages have been planned for the Gulf-based NRIs.
