Human capital is the most critical resource, which needs to be tapped properly for India to achieve a sustained growth in the manufacturing sector.

This was stated by Dr. V. Krishnamurthy, Chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC), while launching the Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM).

Dr. Krishnamurthy said that while India had done well by recording impressive growth in the manufacturing sector, the biggest concern was that of having highly skilled manpower to run the sector. He complimented the stakeholders of PGPEX-VLM and noted that this was the first occasion when the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) have joined hands to run a post graduate programme.

“The programme is expected to generate 300 visionary leaders in the manufacturing field in the next three years”, he said. Dr. Krishnamurthy also thanked Confederation of Indian industry (CII), Japanese International Cooperation Agency, Ministry of Human Resources Development and in particular, Prof. Shoji Shiba of Japan who along with IIT/Kanpur, IIT/Madras and IIM/Calcutta helped to develop the programme.

The Japanese Ambassador to India, Mr. Yasukuni Enoki, expressed happiness of about Japanese involvement in the development of PGPEX-VLM and hoped that the programme would enable India to regain its dominant position in the world in manufacturing which, he pointed out, the country had enjoyed in the pre-colonial era in the 16th and 17th centuries.
