Handloom silk saree exhibition began on Friday, May 4, at Sankara Hall, Alwarpet in Chennai and is scheduled to conclude tomorrow.
This event showcases more than 1000 exquisite sarees, which are the creations of 15 weavers' co-operative societies in Kancheepuram.
Designs include intricate embroideries and modern styles that do not comply with traditional fascia of Kancheepuram saris
The pieces range from Rs2000 to Rs40000 and certain special concessions are also available here.
M R Mohan, Commissioner of Handlooms and Textiles, explained at the inaugural ceremony, "This is an effort to help the co-operatives sell their stock. Of the 70 co-operative societies in the State, 23 are in Kancheepuram. The exhibition will help the 13,000 weaver families there."
Handloom department is also planning to hold similar fair for chudidars, kurtas and other garments at Lalit Kala Akademi.
