The issue of integrated textile park and upgradation of weavers and handloom artisans was discussed by the Planning Commission (PC) and textile ministry.

The commission and the ministry analyzed the irregular distribution of textile parks in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Punjab and West Bengal and demand for such parks in UP, Haryana and the Northeast.

Sources said that PC is keen on developing future facilities in a manner that it would benefit the whole country. This would also help to increase job opportunities in rural and semi-urban areas substantially.

In the rural areas the second largest job provider after agriculture is handloom, currently employing around 70 lakh people and is expected to increase to 2 crore in the next five years.

The PC also suggested a programme of incentives such as duty drawbacks, flexible labour policy and tax concessions for exporters. An amount of about Rs1,200 crore is likely to be invested in the four parks which will come up in the second phase.
