Book Review: Social Accountability by Rajesh Chhabara

Chhabara addresses some of these compliance returns at the beginning of the book in an excellent history of the compliance regime and description of its current state. This is a succinct chapter, providing broader context to the nitty gritty of compliance, which forms the core of the book.

At the back of the book are useful chapters grouped together under the heading “Miscellaneous.” These provide a good primer on what kind of documentation is typically required for audits and monitoring, how and why employee interviews are conducted and the growing importance of worker training.

The most important section here addresses what Chhabara calls “smart management structure.” Here he touches on the importance of integrating compliance objectives and processes into the very DNA of the organization. This topic deserves a book to itself but Chhabara provides an excellent overview for the small and medium sized enterprise.

Though focused on codes of conduct common in the apparel, textile, footwear, toy and sporting goods industries the book does not address country-specific issues. It might have been helpful to include a chapter on China's unique challenges, for example, where compliance to freedom of association requirements demands creative approaches from both the suppliers and buyers.

Chhabara fills a gaping hole in the compliance literature with this excellent primer on the nuts and bolts of building compliant factories, systems and processes. It provides valuable information on the key compliance challenges and outlines basic solutions.
