Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) chaired by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, is expected to approve import of cotton from India and Uzbekistan through land.
Sources say that the commerce ministry had already allowed the import of cotton from India through land, but because of resistance of Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MinFal) the permission was not granted.
Textile industry experts inform that the domestic sector requires 16 million bales of additional cotton, which is being imported from all over the world. These deals, however, are carried out through sea-routes that raise the per mound cost by almost Rs200.
Now, once more the biggies had proposed importing Indian cotton through Wagha border.
This time, even MinFal had also presented an accepting attitude and had agreed to reach a mutually complaint decision.
For import of cotton, MinFal is also supposed to set up quarantine facilities at border entry points.
