Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is one of the water-lacking provinces in China. Rainfall and snowfall are Xinjiang's main water source.

Since last winter, Region has had to bear continued high temperatures. Precipitation is less than past years, snow cover rate is obviously low and river water supply has greatly reduced.

Early March to mid-April is a crucial time for spring planting in Xinjiang, Autonomous Region encountered dry weather in most parts and was lacking rain for nearly 40 straight days. Temperature has increased dramatically and drought threat is further aggravated.

Xinjiang allocated funds of 26 million yuan for fighting the drought in first quarter. On April 24 the local government held a meeting on saving water against drought.

According to agricultural experts, once a serious drought hits Xinjiang, it is likely to last for two to five years. Thus, the impact of the drought will be a disaster.
