Handicraft industry is facing several problems like shortage of raw materials and underdeveloped technology.
Several experts, industry and government officials attended the seminar held on Thursday and discussed issues concerning handicrafts.
Expert calculations show that industry may fail to achieve the $1 billion handicraft export target by 2010.
However, Deputy Minister of Trade Do Nhu Dinh said that handicraft exports are expected to earn over $820 million this year, representing 25 percent growth over last year.
Industry analysts pointed out that though raw material like rattan, bamboo and clay is in available in ample quantities, it is not adequately supplied to manufacturing units.
Several officials also noted that these resources could get extinct in time and there was dire need to unearth newer sources.
Little or almost no knowledge about advanced technology, most importantly, internet and e-commerce has resulted as one of the major hindrances for the exports.
