Adrian Abel new President of SDC

ADRIAN ABEL, 60, is the new president of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC), the world's only chartered society, professional body and educational charity dedicated to the science, technology and application of colour. He takes over from Arthur Welham.
After graduating from Leeds University in 1968, Adrian worked for a paint company in Liverpool before joining Hoechst UK in 1970 as a pigment technologist. In the first few years at Hoechst – a company he would go on to work for for almost 30 years – Adrian undertook part-time study to gain his ASDC in paints and inks.
In 1975 he spent three months in Frankfurt, returning to the UK as Hoechst UK's pigment laboratory manager, progressing to technical manager then marketing services manager and eventually taking responsibility for sales to the printing ink and special applications markets. In 1997 when Clariant took over Hoechst's interest in fine chemicals, he became technology manager, with special responsibility for the development and marketing of dispersions.
In 2000 he joined Holliday Dispersions as managing director, remaining in the position when the Dominion Colour Corporation acquired the UK company in 2005, when it was renamed Gemini Dispersions. Adrian continues as managing director and takes an active role in all aspects of the company's business.
A member of the SDC since 1970, Adrian has had involvement with a number of SDC committees over the years, including education and publications, with his main contribution being to the Colour Index Editorial Board which he joined in 1982. Adrian was instrumental in bringing the pigment manufacturers together when developing a new edition of the Colour Index, which is now exclusively available online and growing in popularity.
