World goes urban

The speeding-up of the secular urbanisation trend during recent decades is due to two key developments. Firstly, industrialisation enabled the exploitation of economies of scale in production.

This required an increasing number of industrial workers. Secondly, more and more countries have opened up to international trade and capital flows. Many adjustment processes are therefore taking place with unprecedented alacrity, because new market participants are effectively leapfrogging stages of market integration.
