Jalaleddin Bassam, Managing Director of Iran Carpet Company, while attending a press conference announced that world carpet exports figures have reached more than $1 billion in 2001 but showed a downturn during 2005.
Global statistics reveals that Iran exported rugs worth $406 million and $17 million worth of other carpet products during 2005. Currently the country ranks first in global carpet market and enjoys a share of 43 percent.
Bassam justified that Iran is losing its grip in the world carpet market as neighbouring manufacturing countries like India and Pakistan produce cheap imitations of Iranian designs. Pakistan and India have a market share with 25.8 and 24.3 percent respectively.
Iran carpet export decreased 12.4 percent during the first three months of 2007 and sale in domestic market increased by 20 percent, as compared to the same period of previous year.
In order to promote sale of hand-woven rugs and carpets in the global market, World Handmade Carpet Organization has been created with China, India and Pakistan in Hong Kong but Iran is yet to join the group.
