Brazilian cotton output forecast optimistic

The official forecast of Brazil's 2006/07 crop has this month been increased modestly. CONAB, the government organization responsible for production estimates, anticipates a record lint outturn of 1,438,800 tonnes compared with its April forecast of 1,422 ,200.

The increase is attributable almost entirely to a higher assessment of the area devoted to cotton in the largest producing state Mato Grosso. Recent field reports appear consistent with CONAB´s optimistic assessment.

Although, in certain localities, producers would welcome one more wet spell before plants enter the final phase of development, in general the appearance of the crop gives few grounds for concern.

A frontal system has last week brought cool overcast conditions to Mato Grosso but this should be of little consequence for the crop, provided more seasonable, warm and fine conditions soon return.
