The consumer price index (CPI) is one of the most useful indicators of inflation. It measures the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods and services commonly purchased by the majority of households.

The types and specifications of goods and services in the CPI basket as well as their weightage are kept constant to assure that any changes in the index reflect pure price changes.
